The Debra and Leon Black family and Aramark have announced the launch of an initiative to assist New York City healthcare workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 epidemic.
Launched with a $20 million commitment from the Black family, including an initial $10 million and a matching gift of up to $10 million, NYC Healthcare Heroes will supply packages of shelf-stable food, household cleaning and personal care products, and over-the-counter medicines to more than a hundred thousand healthcare professionals and volunteers at hospitals across the five boroughs. The initiative was established in partnership with the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City; Robin Hood, which will manage the matching donations; and the American Red Cross, which will coordinate distribution to the healthcare workers. Aramark will donate labor for procurement, assembly, and delivery services. In coordination with the New York City Emergency Management Department and the Greater New York Hospital Association, hospital sites will be prioritized based on greatest need, and the program will gather ongoing feedback to ensure it meets the needs of hospital staff.
“This virus is pushing the limits of our hospital system, but it is also showing the extraordinary kindness and resilience of the brave healthcare workers who make it run,” said New York City mayor Bill de Blasio. “We will never be able to repay our debt of gratitude to them, but on behalf of eight-point-six million New Yorkers, I thank the Black family and Aramark for joining together with Robin Hood and the American Red Cross to support our heroic hospital staff and healthcare professionals.”
